Death Valley Road Stage Race
The Spring Course

Saturday: Stage 1

The initial climb begins at the intersection of Death Valley Road and CA168 at an elevation of 3940 feet and heads up Death Valley Road through Waucoba Canyon to an unmarked summit at an elevation of 7660 feet in 14 miles, with an average grade of 5%. The maximum is 12% in the rollers through the "narrows" and 11% in one corner before that. There will be a KOM line just before the summit, with points awarded in each category. The Feed Zone will be at the summit, and we will be handing up bottles, gels, bars, etc. Once you pass the summit, you descend into Eureka Valley for the rest of the outbound leg. The second aid station, and the turnaround, are at the end of the pavement at 28 miles, and back you go up to the summit again.

The second climb begins at 3200 feet and climbs out of Eureka Valley for 14 miles with an average grade of 5.5% and maximum of 10%. KOM points at the summit Timing Finish at mile 42. Then relax, eat and drink, and cruise back to the cars at the official Start/Finish line. This climb is a favorite with the locals, and you will know why after you have done it!

Sunday: Stage 2

The stage begins at Independence Park. After a very short neutral warmup, we turn onto W. Market St. which becomes Onion Valley Rd. At that point the racing officially begins, and we go straight up to the summit with no interruptions. After a couple of miles of easy climbing the road pitches up and stays between 7% and 10% for over ten miles, right to the Finish. And no Feed Zone today, either. Take what you need for the full length of the climb, and please DO NOT LITTER! Yes, this includes your bottles. Past the official Finish line, we will be at the far end of the campground handing out food and drinks, making hot chocolate if it is chilly at the summit, and taking photos for the website. We will be handing out Official Finisher medals to all and checks to the fastest riders as soon as the USAC official has the results up.

Onion Valley Road is an amazing climb, and possibly the single most daunting pitch in the continental US west of Mt. Washington, NH. You will not be disappointed with the scenery or the climbing on this ride!
